White Shuban - Cholera

In the cholera film, White Shuban, the story is told of Khalif, a man who suffers the signs and symptoms of cholera. His wife Halimo thinks that he has been cursed. His friends are mobilized to come and help, but they also display a lot of ignorance regarding the course of action to take. It takes the intervention of a community health worker to recognize the danger signs and initiate proper health-seeking behaviour. Khalif is rushed to the hospital on a donkey cart and is promptly admitted. The doctor says that he is the fourth person to be admitted for cholera and suspects there is an outbreak. The doctor provides critical information to his worried wife and some of his friends regarding the causes and prevention as well as management of cholera. The nurse also demonstrates how to fix and administer ORS. The story ends well with Khalif recovering, and vital lessons learnt like how easy it is to get cholera, but also how easy it is to prevent it by doing ordinary things like washing hands after visiting the toilet, washing hands before eating, drinking boiled/treated water, eating well cleaned, cooked food, and proper use of toilets. In the earlier scenes, we see how the family might have been exposed to cholera – rolling water jerry cans, eating without washing hands and improper disposal of fecal matter.
